Graduates: They believe they’re ready for college

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 21, 2003

For students preparing for college, there’s always the question of whether their high school education has groomed them for college.

A survey conducted this spring of Tonganoxie High School seniors showed something of a split in this category.

About 54 percent said THS had, while nearly 41 percent didn’t think high school had adequately prepared them for college.

Students who were interviewed said it was hard to determine without taking college courses yet.

“The only thing I can go off of is my four other siblings going to KU,” Jon Gripka said. “I’m fairly optimistic of what Tonganoxie’s going to do for me.”

Jacob Walker also was unsure, but thought his high school workload might be a factor at KU.

“In most of my classes I don’t have much homework, so if I had more it would probably get me ready for college,” Walker said.

Walker’s comments correlated with the student survey in regards to how many hours students spend on homework weekly.

On average, 85 percent spent less than five hours a week on homework, while almost 14 percent spent 5-10 hours. Just a smidge more than 1 percent — which translates into one person — studied more than 10 hours per week on average.
