Resurfacing to start on two county highways
Grab the calendar and draw a red circle around the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
Those are key dates in upcoming road construction projects that will affect motorists in southern Leavenworth County.
According to Tony Marienau, asphalt engineer for Hamm Inc., Perry, his company still must seal cracks along U.S. Highway 24-40 and Kansas Highway 32.
"We've been patching on 32, but we still have some more to do," Marienau said.
Crew will then turn to 24-40 for patching.
"Hopefully, we'll get back on that by the end of the month," Marienau said. "So there probably will be some times periodically that you'll run into our pilot car."
Then work will begin in earnest.
Hamm plans to resurface 24-40 highway between Lawrence and Tonganoxie. In addition, the company will widen Kansas Highway 32 by three feet on each side and then resurface it between Bonner Springs and the highway's intersection with 24-40.
The bulk of the road construction on both highways will start around the Fourth of July.
At times, traffic will be forced into one lane during work on both highways.
After the roads receive a new overlay of asphalt, the Hamm crews will handle new striping and cleanup.
"It will be Labor Day, likely, before it's all done," Marienau said.
