Our view: Serving our country a year-round job

By Staff | Nov 12, 2003

A sign outside Tonganoxie’s West Haven Baptist Church has served as a daily reminder about American troops who are serving our country.

The sign encourages motorists to remember to pray for soldiers because they are still in harm’s way.

How true.

This nation is at war. And surely nothing can be more difficult for soldiers and their families.

Recently, several Tonganoxie families have received good news from their soldiers. After months of waiting and wondering, these families were told their loved ones are coming home — at least for a break from the conflict in the Middle East.

So maybe some prayers have been answered.

Veterans of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War certainly know the rigors of war. It is unimaginable to those who have not fought in battle. And the effects of war on families of soldiers are unimaginable to those who have not waited anxiously at home.

And while it is more than appropriate that the sign at West Haven is up this week — considering that Tuesday was Veterans Day — perhaps those in charge of that sign would consider putting it up again later.

After all, it’s good to remember that soldiers are serving our country 365 days each year.
