10 years ago: Oct. 20, 1993

Deaths: Randal Adam Starcher, 16, Tonganoxie, died Oct. 13; Virginia L. Witt, 66, Lawrence, died Oct. 15.

Births: Charles and Dianna Yates announce the birth of a son, Colby Charles, on Oct. 10; Chuck and Erica Clark announce the arrival of a daughter, Taylor Lynn, Oct. 3; Carol and Jeff Jacobs announce the birth of a son, Dylan Robert Jacobs, Oct. 4.

On Sunday, Nellie Scott celebrated her 95th birthday. She was born at home in Kentucky on Oct. 18, 1898, the youngest of four girls. At age 5, her family moved to Jarbalo, and later to McLouth. (Mrs. Scott worked as a paper hanger, at City Hall, and also wrote a column for The Mirror for 20 years.)

(Pictures) Tonganoxie football boosters created a banner in memory of sophomore student-athlete Randy Starcher, fatally injured last Wednesday. Starcher was a member of the junior varsity football team.

25 years ago: Oct. 18, 1978

Deaths: Frank William DeGraeve, Tonganoxie, died Oct. 11 at his home at the age of 44 years; Mrs. Ruth L. Petrie, 72, Lawrence, died Wednesday.

Births: Petty Officer Second Class and Mrs. Noel Thomas Burkitt announce the birth of a son, Anthony Thomas, on Sept. 18; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mitts announce the birth of a daughter, Kylene Beth, on Oct. 1; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jewell of Clarinda, Iowa, announce the birth of a son, Donald Eugene, Oct. 9; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Rocky) Himpel of Oskaloosa, announce the birth of a daughter, Jill Annette, Oct. 6.

Don and Ella Roberts of Tonganoxie will be honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on Oct. 22. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts became grandparents of a boy on Friday the 13th.

50 years ago: Oct. 29, 1953

Deaths: Services for Jerry Ken Woehr, Tonganoxie, who died Oct. 22, 1953, at the age of 16, were Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Tonganoxie; services for Ernest Samuel Cook, Tonganoxie, who died Oct. 22, at the age of 22, were Saturday at the Methodist Church. Mrs. Ethel Irene Shrader, was born Jan. 16, 1927, at Greenfield, Iowa, and was called away very suddenly on Oct. 22.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Davoren announce the birth of a son, John Edgar, on Oct. 14; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Laming announce the birth of a daughter, Linda Ann, Oct. 25; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stoll announce the birth of a son, Stephen Richard, Oct. 15.

Jarbalo: Pvt. and Mrs. William F. Price of New Windsor House, N.Y., announce the birth of a son, William F. Price Jr., on Oct. 22.

The Weekly News Reel: The Bystander has a clipping that says: “You never know how the human voice can change until you hear a woman quit scolding her husband in order to answer the telephone.”

75 years ago: Oct. 11, 1928

John B. Bender, 71 years old, died Tuesday evening at his home west of Tonganoxie.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shirk announce the birth of a daughter, Anna Josephine, Sept. 29.

Stranger: Thermometers in the neighborhood registered 90 and 92 Monday. We think that’s a record for October.

Stanwood: Several families gathered at the parsonage last Wednesday, for a general workday. The gentlemen tore down the barn and partly rebuilt it, while the ladies tacked three comforters, and did quilting. At noon hour a splendid dinner was served.

Honey Valley: Twenty-five relatives and friends attended a family reunion at the John Parson home Sunday.

Tonganoxie Knot Hole: Almost every man believes in heredity until he sees his son acting like an idiot.

100 years ago: Oct. 22, 1903

Mount Olivet: Mr. Wosser’s fine new residence together with the old home and all the contents burned to the ground Saturday night. No insurance.

Dr. Coe reports a new girl at Geo. Erwine’s.

Mrs. Julius Fischer, of Lawrence, went home yesterday, after visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Freienmuth.

Luther Modlin recently received a gasoline engine, and will use it to run a circular saw.

Dr. Chas. Slaughter is back home and has had phone No. 139 put in his office.

E.H. Cox has had sort of a family reunion at his place the past week. He has enjoyed visits from his sisters, Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Hollingsworth, and his brother, James Cox of Oklahoma, all former Tonganoxie residents.

The Pony Creek and Reno Sunday schools will unite in a temperance meeting at the Reno church a week from Sunday.
