10 years ago: Nov. 3, 1993

Tonganoxie Township Fire Department responded Oct. 30 to a house fire on State Avenue, according to Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, Janette Nesmith. The home belonging to John Tiner was a total loss, as well as a fifth wheel trailer parked in the driveway. The cause of the fire is unknown and damage was placed at over $40,000.

Births: James and Paula Murphy, Basehor, announce the arrival of twin sons, Colin Joseph and Ryan James, on Oct. 4, 1993; Ron and Kami Smith announce the birth of a daughter, Kaylee Delores, on Oct. 12, 1993.

The descendants of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Hubbard held their annual family reunion Oct. 17, 1993, at the Linwood Community Building with a carry-in basket dinner.

Jarbalo Jottings: Jane Turner and Gail Fitzwater had lunch at El Sambre in Leavenworth Friday to celebrate their birthdays which were Friday and Saturday, respectively.

25 years ago: Nov. 1, 1978

In 1956, six women with $10 in their treasury and a debt of $20 began working for adequate library facilities in Linwood, a small community of less than 400 residents on Kansas Highway 32, between Lawrence and Bonner Springs. On Nov. 4, exactly 22 years later, the entire community will celebrate a ground-breaking ceremony that marks the start of construction of a $30,000 library and community center.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Heintzelman announce the birth of a son, Drew Bryant, on Oct. 26, 1978; Mr. and Mrs. Rickey Lee Beardsley announce the birth of a son, Rickey Lee, Jr., Oct. 6, in Honolulu, Hawaii; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Allen Orr announce the birth of a son, Michael Allen Jr., on Oct. 23, 1978.

The First Baptist Church celebrated its 110th anniversary with a service Oct. 22, 1978. Rev. Edward E. Hobby was the host pastor.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Mahoney and daughter, Melinda, enjoyed hearing their son, Mike Mahoney sing with the Impact Brass and Singers at the Ozark Bible College at Joplin, Mo.

Springdale News: Mrs. Arabell Jordan, Mrs. Rex Williams’ mother, received word that her sister, Mrs. Goldie Darland of California, passed away last week.

50 years ago: Nov. 12, 1953

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Nathan H. Foster announce the birth of a girl, Gwendolyn Ann, Nov. 1, 1953; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Harman are the parents of twins, Barbara June and Leslie Ann, born Nov. 8, 1953; Mr. and Mrs. George Lee Meyer of Oskaloosa announce the birth of a son, George William, Nov. 8, 1953.

Mr. and Mrs. Ivan R. Johnson of Bonner Springs are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary Nov. 15th, with an open house at their home between 2 and 5 p.m.

Ray Steinmetz of Oskaloosa went atop his barn on a cold day, and the ladder fell away. He clung to the roof 45 minutes before his wife looked out and saw his predicament.

75 years ago: Oct. 25, 1928

Basehor News: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Treff of near Basehor invited a number of their friends in to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday.

Linwood: Mr. and Mrs. Will Henik are the proud parents of a baby girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Graham and son, Jesse, attended the funeral of Mrs. Janet Dick, in McLouth, Tuesday.

J.J. Bartlett has a new mascot. It’s a tame wolf.

Charles Laming, of the Ford Garage, is in Kansas City attending the three-day Ford Service School. Mr. Laming said every Ford dealer who attends this school will be given the privilege to take home an extra Ford which means one Ford order will be filled promptly.

100 years ago: Nov. 5, 1903

A week’s old child of a family named Matthews living in the south part of town, died Sunday and was buried Monday.

A Hallow E’en party was given at the home of Charles Leidy last Saturday evening.

Some men work overtime in trying to lay up something for the rainy days of their grandchildren.

The library is moving into the new quarters today.

Sunday was a good day for boys. Arrivals are reported at the homes of Met Peters and Oscar Davis.

Sam Jones has an attack of appendicitis. Sunday two doctors came from Kansas City to perform an operation on him but he felt so much better that he concluded to chance it without the aid of surgery.

Charles Bourlier after holding the Laming farm less than a year has sold it again, clearing $7 per acre on the 320. The new purchaser is Robert L. Kiester, of Nemaha County, Neb., and he gave $16,000 for the place.
