MHS girls should challenge again

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 3, 2003

The McLouth High girls Cross country team hopes to make some more noise on the state level this fall.

After finishing eighth two years ago and ninth last year, the Bulldogs are hoping for another successful meet in Wamego.

McLouth will be without Courtney Edmonds, who is now running cross country and track at Kansas. Edmonds placed 26th at last season’s state meet.

This year’s squad, however, returns a cluster of runners from that state team.

Junior Erin Watson placed 47th last season, while senior Katie Booth took 63rd. Junior Hallie Watson placed 78th, and Neva Gardner placed 85th. Coming in 89th was Tina Edgell and 90th Darcy Keling, who, along with Edmonds, aren’t on this year’s roster.

The Bulldogs have a solid top four runners, but the team needs one more for that No. 5 runner.

“The door’s open as far as who the fifth runner’s going to be,” coach George Karn said. “There’s going to be a lot of candidates.”

Also on the squad are Christy Gunther, Michala Karn, Crystal Snyder and Cecilia Canizales.

Matt Scarlett returns as McLouth’s lone state medalist a year ago. Scarlett snagged the final medal with a 20th-place finish in Wamego.

He likely will lead the Bulldogs again this season.

“He’s our number one runner right now,” Karn said.

The senior actually was the Bulldogs only state runner a year ago, which means Karn has some picking to do for his remaining four runners.

Juniors Justin Drinnon, Bryce Hoffhines and Scott Smelser, sophomores Cody Berry Tanner Bristol and Nick Edgell and freshmen Sam Anderson, Lance Lamborn, Spencer Lamborn, Dustin Rainey and Ryan Saxton also are on this year’s squad.

The Bulldogs have the honor of running against KC Christian in the Delaware Valley League.

After dominating the Class 2A ranks, KC Christian jumped up a class and won the 3A title last season.

McLouth opens the regular season Thursday with a meet at the Shawnee North Community Center in Topeka.

Jefferson West is the host school for the event.
