Shouts and murmurs

By Lisa Stevens John - | Oct 7, 1999

Many of our readers have remarked that they appreciate the color pictures in The Mirror. So do I.

It is a lack of color, I think, that makes us appreciate color all the more. For instance, I delight in looking at the tree-covered hills this time of year. Even if it’s just a glance up Hubbell Hill before I enter the front door of The Mirror, one look is enough to raise my spirits. I often think of the words, “I look to the hills from whence cometh my help.” Help, or rather, inspiration, can come from many sources, one of which is the beauty of nature.

When I lived in central Kansas where autumn in the country pretty much means a shelterbelt of trees that turns yellow, I learned to find beauty in individual trees to take a smaller, but still delicious look at autumn. For instance, in St. John there was one tree that turned the brightest shade of red I have ever seen. It was just one tree not a vibrant hillside as we are spoiled with here but it was beautiful all the same.

It’s an oddity in central Kansas that autumn trees often are the subject of conversation, but that very few people seemed to have actually planted colorful trees in their yards. Appreciation without cultivation is a curious thing.

And now, that avenue explored, I must return to my point. Thank you for your comments about our color photographs.

Remember that our cameras are merely the instruments to record the natural beauty that already surrounds us. It is our pleasure and a delight to bright to you these colorful reflections in The Mirror.

  • Congratulations to the Tonganoxie High School Chieftains on their 24-to-0 victory Friday night over the Basehor Bobcats. I didn’t get to the game, but I did catch part of it on Channel 39 during the evening when the Chieftains were leading 18 to 0. I heard the final score Saturday morning at breakfast Chieftain pride was the talk of the tables at Bitler’s restaurant.
