Jeannin tosses one-hitter; THS sweeps Bonner Springs on road
Tonganoxie's swift southpaw silenced Bonner Springs on the road.
Senior Katie Jeannin on Thursday allowed one run in the first game and then hurled a one-hitter in the second game as the Chieftains won the first game, 3-1, and completed the day with a 4-0 victory in game 2.
"Bonner had a lot of errors and we played pretty well," THS coach Merri Samuels said. "The field was soft and slow, so that might have helped us, too."
Jeannin scored first for the Chieftains in game 1.
With two outs, freshman Amie Riddle connected for a single on a 3-1 pitch.
Tonganoxie scored again in the third and fifth, thanks to Addie Heim. The junior produced a one-out triple, connecting on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Riddle again brought Heim in with a single and Tonganoxie had a 2-0 lead. And in the fifth, Heim had another extra base-hit. Her double brought in Laura Jeannin, who also hit a double for the Chieftains.
"I can count on her a lot," Heim said of Heim. "She's definitely been a really good hitter."
Bonner Springs did cut the lead in half in the fourth with a run, but Heim's RBI in the fifth gave Tonganoxie added insurance.
In the second game, Tonganoxie again broke out to an early lead, but the Chieftains scored two runs on just one hit.
Katie Jeannin led off with a walk and Laura Jeannin reached on an error. After Heim grounded out to short, Sarah Holliday was hit by a pitch. Amie Riddle then delivered the only hit of the inning with a single.
Ashlee Murphy scored in the fourth and Heim in the seventh as the Chieftains put up four runs.
It was the pitching, however, that stole the show in game 2. Katie Jeannin struck out five and gave up a hit and a walk to the same person -- the lead-off hitter. Jeannin's performance preserved a Tonganoxie sweep and helped the Chieftains extend their winning streak to four games.
Tonganoxie was 7-5 heading into Tuesday's games against Santa Fe Trail at home. The Chieftains then will travel Thursday to play Perry-Lecompton, a team THS swept at home last week.
