Bridge work set for K-32

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Aug 18, 2004

The same Topeka company that is building Tonganoxie’s new sewage treatment plant soon will undertake reconstruction of a bridge over Stranger Creek in Linwood.

BRB Contractors has been awarded a $3.12 million project by the Kansas Department of Transportation to replace the bridge over Stranger Creek on Kansas Highway 32, just east of Linwood.

According to Ken Johnson, a BRB vice president and bridge division manager, work likely will get under way on the bridge in late October. Construction will span about 10 months, he said.

Johnson said replacement of a bridge on such a well-traveled, two-lane highway presents challenges — for both his firm and for drivers.

“The project will be constructed in a phased manner,” he said. “So there will always be one lane open.”

Traffic over the bridge will be controlled by signals. The state transportation department’s most recent traffic counts, about 3,220 vehicles travel each day on K-32 at that point.

“It makes it harder and takes longer to build the job,” Johnson said. “But there aren’t many good places to detour traffic over there.”

According to KDOT, BRB bid $3,124,265 for the project.

BRB also is constructing Tonganoxie’s new $3.68 million sewage treatment plant, which is scheduled for completion in March.
