What a summer it’s been. Plenty of rain. Cooler-than-usual temperatures.

Who wants to flee to Colorado, with weather such as this?

But, like much of Colorado, Tonganoxie continues to face water problems. And this summer’s respite from 100-plus-degree days and sultry nights is only that — a respite. As sure as the sun will shine, Tonganoxie residents again will swelter during the summer months. And that probably will happen sooner than later.

That’s why it’s so important that city officials make a decision about the future of the city’s water supply.

On the table are two proposals. One is from Suburban Water of Basehor. The other is from the Board of Public Utilities within the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan.

City officials have talked extensively with representatives from both BPU and Suburban.

And now, it’s time to act.

Tonganoxie City Council members can’t afford to wait any longer on securing additional water for the city.

This summer, city residents have been fortunate. The city hasn’t been forced to ban outdoor watering. And adequate levels in city wells hasn’t been an issue.

But that won’t last.

Even though Tonganoxie’s water supply problem has been ignored for years, it’s clearly time to make some decisions and move forward.

A city that’s growing as quickly as Tonganoxie is can’t afford to wait any longer.
