THS, McLouth teams start seasons
Tonganoxie and McLouth high school teams joined nearly 350 Kansas schools on Monday for one thing -- practice.
Fall practice got started in the Sunflower State as Tonganoxie cross country, football, soccer and volleyball teams and McLouth cross country, football and volleyball teams started their fall campaigns.
The THS cross country team, under longtime coach Phil Williams, opens the season Sept. 2 in the Tonganoxie Quadrangular. The Chieftains will have their Red/White meet on Aug. 27 on their home course.
Tonganoxie football opens the season Sept. 3 at home against Lansing. The Chieftains and Lions usually face each other in the season finale, but now that the teams have been assigned to different districts, the schools face each other earlier in the season. The team's Red/White scrimmage will be Aug. 27 at Beatty Field. Coach Mark Elston enters his fifth season as Tonganoxie's coach.
THS soccer, again this season, will be the first team to start the regular season. The Chieftains play Mill Valley, last year's third-place team in Class 5A, on Aug. 27 at Chieftain Park. The team's Red/White scrimmage will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Chieftain Park. Luke Denney directs the soccer program in his second year.
Tonganoxie volleyball coach Tiffany Parker, entering her fourth year at THS, will have more preseason practice time than her fellow Chieftain coaches. The varsity team won't start the season until Sept. 9 in a home quadrangular. The Red/White scrimmage, meanwhile, will be Aug. 27.
McLouth teams will have their scrimmages Aug. 27 also as part of the Bulldog Fall Sports Preview.
MHS cross country, also under the direction of a longtime coach, will open the season Sept. 2 at Jeff West. George Karn again is the MHS coach.
Second-year coach Harry Hester and the MHS football team start action Sept. 3 at Horton.
The MHS volleyball team, meanwhile, gets the earliest start. The Bulldogs will compete Aug. 28 at the Delaware Valley League Tournament in Oskaloosa. The team then will begin regular-season league play at Wathena against WHS and Pleasant Ridge. Rachel Webb begins her second season as the McLouth volleyball coach.
