THS Stras claim sweepstakes at E-State camp

August 19, 2004

The Tonganoxie High School dance team earned plenty of awards at the All-American Dance/Drill Team School's Summer Camp last month.

The THS Stars earned a Sweepstakes award, the highest honor possible at the camp held June 7-10 at Emporia State University. The team had 10 of its 14 members attend the camp.

The Stars also won Gussie Nell Davis Team of the Day and Gussie Nell Davis Team of the Week awards for team unity, hard work and improvement. Gussie Nell Davis is credited with introducing the concept of a drill team.

On the individual level, junior captain Jenna Bradley earned all-American recognition and sophomore lieutenant Amie Riddle earned all-American honorable mention.

Because of their recognitions, the two members can perform in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Bradley also was awarded the title of Outstanding Dancer. Only eight dancers received that recognition.

Riddle and Bradley will be raising funds to pay for the Thanksgiving trip.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the team members may contact Stars coach Jenna Delay at the high school, (913) 845-2654.
