Recycling coordinator leaving position

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 25, 2004

At the next SORT Recycling date on Sept. 11, a new recycling coordinator will be in charge.

Earleta Morey is taking over for Kim Kolman, who oversaw the Sort Organize and Recycle in Tonganoxie program for 14 years.

“I’m hoping with Earleta’s involvement with school and community, there are some things I didn’t do,” Kolman said.

Morey has been a longtime director for the Tonganoxie Volunteer Center located in the Quonset hut just northwest of Tonganoxie Elementary School.

In fact, former Volunteer Center director Markay LaGue started the SORT program through the center.

Morey is ready to assume the duties of recycling coordinator. She expects the transition from Kolman to be smooth.

“She has it so organized that it’s not going to be that hard to take over,” Morey said. “She did a great job.”

Recycling in Tonganoxie is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

Various civic groups and students organizations have helped with processing recyclables for the SORT program. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, County Cruisers Car Club, the Tonganoxie High Science Club, Livewires 4-H, Knights of Columbus, the Tonganoxie Christian, West Haven Baptist and United Methodist youth groups, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts all have assisted SORT. Karen Stephenson’s fourth-grade class, which has volunteered in the past, will help at the fairgrounds on four occasions in the coming school year.

Morey said that if anyone is interested in helping volunteer with SORT, they may call her at the volunteer center at (913) 845-2646.

Other sites

Other recycling opportunities also are available in the area. Recycling bins for newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs, newspapers, mail and office and school papers are located at West Haven Baptist and Tonganoxie Christian churches, and at the Tonganoxie elementary and junior high schools.

In Basehor, recycling drop-off is from 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of each month in the Basehor City Hall parking lot, 2620 N. 155th Street.

In Leavenworth

In Leavenworth, recyclable products can be taken to the city’s recycling center at Lawrence Avenue and Halderman Street. The center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Transfer station

Another site also accepts materials. The Leavenworth County Solid Waste Transfer Station is at 24936 136th Street, east of Kansas Highway 7 on Gilman Road. The station accepts paper, aluminum, tin, glass and some plastics, along with tires, yard waste, appliances and construction waste.

The recycling program is free, but the county charges for construction waste and household trash. Cost for construction waste is $28.90 per ton, while household trash is $23.90. A $5 minimum fee is charged, according to Carol Knight of the transfer station.

The station is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. On other holidays, such as Thanksgiving, the station usually is open until 1 p.m. or 2 p.m., Knight said. For more information about dropping off items at the station, call (913) 727-2858.
