Girls get back on track with win against Braves
The first semester at Tonganoxie High is complete.
What better time for THS girls basketball coach Randy Kraft to hand out grade cards.
"The last few games I would have given us a C-," Kraft said Friday. "Tonight was a B or a B+."
That's not a bad grade to show your parents.
Tonganoxie rolled past visiting Bonner Springs, 52-30, on Friday and headed into the winter break with a 3-2 mark.
Friday's performance was something the Chieftains were accustomed to in their first two games of the season. Blowout wins had Tonganoxie off to a positive start, but poor free-throw shooting against De Soto and Chanute last week in the Central Heights Tournaments doomed Tonganoxie in single-digit losses.
But as Kraft alluded to, the team played much better against Bonner Springs.
"We worked all week on executing," Kraft said. "We're headed in the right direction."
Tonganoxie again had solid performances from sophomore Ali Pistora and senior Addie Heim. Pistora scored a game-high 17, while Heim also was in double figures with 10.
But another Chieftain had her second big outing of the year. Senior Heather Deaver scored 14 for Tonganoxie, marking her second double-figure performance of the season.
"She's starting to assert herself in the post," Kraft said.
That will be crucial this season, Kraft noted, as more teams will key on Heim and Pistora.
The game marked Tonganoxie's first Kaw Valley League contest. Against Bonner Springs, the Chieftains were hot out of the gates as they built a 10-1 lead.
A 10-0 spurt that spanned portions of the first and second quarters also helped Tonganoxie build a commanding lead.
"Everybody was looking for their shot, and we were trying to work more as a team tonight," Pistora said. "That was our goal, and I think we accomplished it."
It wasn't a bad yuletide effort, either.
"It's a good Christmas present, I guess," Pistora said.
