Morris’ big night can’t catapult Chieftains to Kaw Valley win

December 22, 2004

Michael Morris' shoulders had to be sore after Friday's basketball games against Bonner Springs.

The Chieftain center carried Tonganoxie with 22 points, a performance usually reserved for fellow senior Kirk Rodell.

But the performance wasn't enough for a Tonganoxie victory in the team's first Kaw Valley League game.

In the Chieftains' last contest before the winter break, Daniel Workman scored with 4:16 left in the first half. Another Chieftain other than Morris wouldn't score again until about three minutes left when Robert Kirch hit a baseline jumper.

Morris scored a career-high 24, but it wasn't enough against the balanced Braves. Bonner Springs prevailed, 57-45.

"We need to recognize these teams are going to try to stop him," THS coach David Walker said about Morris. "Until then, we have to be getting the ball to him."

The Chieftains certainly went to Morris numerous times. And late in the game, Tonganoxie's biggest weapon almost put Tonganoxie in perfect position.

Trailing 49-44, Morris took the ball from a teammate near the basket. The senior headed toward the goal and the bucket went in, but he was called for a charge. The basket didn't count and Tonganoxie's late rally was extinguished.
