Court hearings set for burglary suspects
A preliminary hearing has been set for one of three Kansas City, Kan., men allegedly involved in two rural Leavenworth County burglaries Dec. 16.
A preliminary hearing for Steven R. Higgins, 24, is set for at 2 p.m. next Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court.
Higgins faces charges of residential burglary, two counts of felony criminal damage to property, fleeing/attempting to elude law enforcement and misdemeanor theft.
Higgins, who also faces a parole violation, remains in custody at the Leavenworth County Jail.
Mark A. Parra, 20, also is in sheriff's custody because he could not secure his bond, which is set at $50,000.
Parra is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. today, and at that time, a preliminary hearing should be scheduled for a later date.
"It would be our intent to set his preliminary hearing for the same time as Mr. Higgins," said Bill Winzenburg of the county attorney's office.
Parra faces charges of residential burglary, felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor theft.
The third male arrested in connection with the burglaries is 16 and is being held at the juvenile detention center. He had a court appearance with his lawyer last week and is being held at the center until his preliminary hearing, which has been set for 9:30 a.m. Jan. 25. The juvenile faces charges of residential burglary, criminal damage to property and theft.
The three allegedly were involved in burglaries near Linwood and Bonner Springs. They later led law enforcement officials on a car chase that started northeast of Linwood and ended near 142nd and Parallel.
Two of the suspects were apprehended after fleeing by foot. The third male, Higgins, turned himself in Dec. 20.
