Fit to be tied (for first place)

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 18, 2004

Mighty Santa Fe Trail has been at or the near top of the Kaw Valley League in recent years, while Tonganoxie has made upward strides in the last two seasons.

On Saturday, the Chieftains set up camp at the top of the hill.

THS led by just one after the first quarter, but outscored the Chargers in each of the next three periods for a 55-36 win in Tonganoxie.

The loss dropped Santa Fe Trail to 9-7 overall, but more importantly, the Chargers now are 7-2 in conference play.

Tonganoxie improved to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play. The Chieftains now are tied with De Soto for first place in the KVL. The Wildcats are 16-1 overall and 8-1 in league.

De Soto’s only loss came earlier in the year against SFT. Tonganoxie’s lone KVL loss was to the Wildcats.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with our effort,” THS coach Randy Kraft said. “What we accomplished was because of our defense and it takes a lot of energy to play defense.”

The Chieftains apparently replenished their tanks before Saturday’s matinee against Santa Fe Trail.

Tonganoxie defeated Mill Valley, 47-34, on Friday night in Shawnee and then played the Chargers at 1 p.m. Saturday in a make-up game from the previous week.

Against Trail, Addie Heim led all scorers with 16 and Michelle McWilliams also was in double figures with 10. Kelly Breuer scored nine against the Chargers.

Sarah Holliday, who pitched in six, said the Chieftains simply didn’t crack against SFT.

“Today it was physical, but we were more relaxed,” Holliday said. “I think in the back of our minds we thought about last year and wanted to get revenge and beat them.”

Tonganoxie now has won 10 of its last 11 games after opening the season in the Anderson County Tournament.

The Chieftains traveled Tuesday to Perry-Lecompton, but will finish the regular season with three home games — Friday against Lansing, Tuesday against Immaculata and Feb. 27 against Bonner Springs.
