Tires on two Chieftain buses damaged during Bonner games

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 22, 2004

The wheels on the buses couldn’t go round and round Friday after the Tonganoxie-Bonner Springs basketball games.

While the teams were playing inside at Bonner Springs High School, someone tampered with tire stems on both of Tonganoxie’s buses, which left the tires flat.

The tire problems were discovered about 9:30 p.m. when the teams thought they were headed home.

Players actually didn’t leave Bonner Springs until roughly 11 p.m. Shari Curry, Tonganoxie transportation director, said the stems had to be replaced. A towing service then aired the tires up.

“They messed with the valve stems but didn’t slash the tires,” Curry said. “They were damaged so you couldn’t go in there and just air them up.”

The incident likely occurred after 5:30 p.m. Although the first bus arrived at 3:30 p.m., the second came at 5:30 p.m.

THS athletics director Brandon Parker said Monday that he had no further information regarding the incident.

The Tonganoxie girls defeated Bonner Springs in overtime, 53-51, while a late spurt pushed the BSHS boys to a 66-57 victory in their contest.
