Obituary: Janet G. Bowen
Services for Janet G. Bowen, 40, Olathe, were Saturday, May 29, 2004, at R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, Leavenworth, with the Rev. Tom Bailey officiating. Burial was in Mount Muncie Cemetery.
Ms. Bowen died last Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at her home, following a battle with diabetes and its complications. She was born Oct. 3, 1963, the daughter of Burton and Joyce Hicks Bowen.
She was raised in Leavenworth, where she attended school. She graduated from high school in 1980. She then attended Kansas University, and after graduation she attended Penn Valley College and obtained a physical therapy assistant certification. She was two courses short of a master's degree in exercise physiology at KU.
She was a long-distance runner in high school and had been a member of the KU Crew team. She participated in many races, including more than 30 marathons and participated in the Bike Across Kansas three times. Her fight with diabetes and her passion for long-distance running were featured on the cover of the spring 2004 official newsletter of the World Triathlon Corp.
She taught CPR, EMD, paramedics, life guarding, aquatics arthritis and diabetes course. She was a trained member of the scuba diving rescue team.
Survivors include two sisters, Judy Rounda and Jill Guenther, both of Leavenworth; and her stepmother, Dorothy Bowen, Leavenworth. Her mother died in 1984, and her father died in 1996.
