Basehor to host PRIDE team

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Jun 9, 2004

A three-person evaluation team today visits Basehor as part of the annual PRIDE competition.

“The evaluation team, which is one of three that will be traveling the state, is being asked to evaluate how PRIDE communities have organized themselves, identified priority projects and have pulled together on successful improvement efforts,” said Dan Kahl, Kansas State University Research and Extension coordinator for the PRIDE program.

“The evaluation is conducted at the community’s request. The on-site visits offer communities an opportunity to show they are following an effective community development process and to ask questions of the evaluators.”

According to Chuck Wilderson, who has worked with Basehor PRIDE for a number of years, the community is invited to join the PRIDE committee in hosting the team, which will start its visit at 9:30 a.m. today at Basehor City Hall.

Recently, Basehor has undertaken the reorganization of Youth PRIDE, as well as completed a community assessment, according to George Smith, Basehor PRIDE chairman.

The PRIDE program is a statewide community improvement program that’s co-sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce and K-State Research and Extension.

It helps communities organize and implement community improvement initiatives.

The evaluation team comprises Judy Leyerzaps, Community Development, Abilene, DeAnna Gerhardt, Rural Development coordinator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Garden City; and Eric Berg, community forestry coordinator for the Kansas Forest Service in Manhattan.

The three state evaluation teams will select award winners after their community visits are completed, and those winners will be recognized in November at the annual PRIDE Day conference in Salina.
