‘Odd Couple’ performances set for July

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 9, 2004

The return of the Tonganoxie Community Theater truly will be a community event.

Every cast member for this year’s production, “The Odd Couple,” is from Tonganoxie, and five of them are Tonganoxie High faculty members.

Chris Delay will play half of the odd couple. Delay, who also is the program coordinator, will be Felix Ungar, while fellow THS instructor Steve Harrell will be Oscar Madison.

The play is slated for two performances — one each on July 9 and 10.

Fellow teachers Jenna Delay, Scott Smith and John Robison also will perform in the play. Delay will play the part of Cecily Pigeon, while Smith will portray Murray and Robison will be Lloyd. Robison also is the play director.

Rounding out the cast are Jodi Bowersox as Gwendolyn Pigeon, Kevin Bowersox as Roy, Eli Jones as Stu, Garrett Kelly as Speed and Brandon Stevens as Vinnie.

The community theater endured a four-year break, but has returned this summer. Before the break, the theater ran for about 20 years.

Harrell said he is excited about having an all-Tonganoxie cast for this year’s production.

“It really is community and that’s what we’re really shooting for, getting some community involvement and having a creative opportunity for the community,” Harrell said.

Thanks to a work study program through the Kansas Department of Human Resources, the theater again will be a reality.

The program is open to high school students in Leavenworth County who meet low-income and individualized educational program criteria. Students handle behind-the-scenes work of a play, from marketing to stage props.

Harrell said about 18 students were expected to take advantage of the work study.

Rehearsal nights will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout June.

Assisting Robison with the play are Harrell and Chris Delay. Both are class instructors for the work study. Delay also is the program coordinator for the play.

Harrell said anyone who wants to assist with the play may call him at (913) 845-3902 or Delay at (913) (913) 369-2723.

“People out there interested in helping out with technical theater or box office, they can give us a ring,” Harrell said.
