Letter to the editor: Thanks for the help

By Staff | Jun 30, 2004

To the editor:

I would like to publicly thank Tonganoxie natives Jim and Sandy Johnson who, one day after getting married, found the time to help me, a traveler in distress.

I pulled into the Casey’s quick shop (in Tonganoxie) to get a beverage to slake my thirst after a harrowing day of travel (from Maine through Boston, Chicago, and Kansas City). Thinking that things could not get any worse — my itinerary had been cancelled, my luggage lost, you name it — I returned to my van and saw that the driver side rear tire was FLAT.

Jim and Sandy happened to be there filling an air bubble to fix a flat on their lawnmower. Seeing my “fix,” Jim patiently dropped the doughnut tire (which hadn’t been used in 10 years and was practically cemented to its mount), removed my blown tire, mounted the doughnut, then advised me how fast to go to proceed safely.

Sandy, meanwhile, entertained me with her upbeat attitude and supportive manner. Neither would accept any payment or even one of the balsam fir pillows I was bringing home as a Maine souvenir.

So, here is a great big “thank you,” not only from me but from my husband, too, who was grateful to have me home again.

Tonganoxie folks, especially Jim and Sandy, are great! Thanks again.

Dru Clarke,

St. George, Kan.
