Obituary: Betty Irene Holmes
Memorial services for Betty Irene Holmes, 80, Linwood, will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Quisenberry Funeral Home in Tonganoxie, where a family reception will follow. Private inurnment is planned at Mount Sidney Cemetery, Linwood.
Mrs. Holmes died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at her home. She was born June 4, 1924, in Baldwin, the daughter of Earl and Nina (Randel) Mathia.
She was a homemaker and farmwife who milked cows, drove the tractor for square baling hay and was an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of Linwood United Methodist Church, having served as president of the United Methodist Women organization. She also had trained with the Sherman Township Fire Department.
On Dec. 26, 1940, she married Quentin A. Holmes in Paola. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Melvin, Linwood; three brothers, Donald Mathia, Kansas City, Mo., Merle Mathia, Sumerville, Texas, and Harold Mathia, Muncie, Kan.; a sister, Minnie Chapman, New Jersey; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, Quentin A. Holmes Jr., died in 1943.
