10 years ago: Oct. 26, 1994

Death: Homer Waybright, 80, Tonganoxie, died Oct. 18, 1994.

Births: Michael, Bobbi and Ian McClellan, Tonganoxie, announce the arrival of the newest member of their family, Connor Crady, on Oct. 12, 1994; Shirley Saladin and Jim Nemeth of Tonganoxie announce the birth of a son, Cody Lane Charles Nemeth, on Oct. 19, 1994.

Springdale Scene: Best wishes to Mr. Floyd Lawrence of our community. He was celebrating his 89th birthday on Friday, Oct. 21, 1994.

(Picture) David and Debra Foster are all smiles after winning $100,000 with a “quick pick” lottery ticket recently. A niece, Jamie Warren, shares in the happiness.

McLouth News: Residents were saddened by the death of Merrill Vantyle on Saturday. He was a nice, friendly man and liked by all who met him. Mae Reardon passed away last week. She enjoyed visiting and never seemed to meet a stranger. She will be missed by all who knew her.

McLouth News: Forty-seven members of the family of Nellie Scott celebrated her 96th birthday with a dinner Sunday at the William Kesinger American Legion hall in McLouth.

25 years ago: Oct. 24, 1979

Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Soetaert celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary October recently. At the October Senior Citizen monthly meeting at the Riford Club they shared their cake with their friends. (Picture.)

Deaths: Melvin E. Hubbel, 65, Kansas City, Kan., died Tuesday. Frederick W. Thompson, 68, Leavenworth, died Saturday.

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. Tom Murry announce the birth of a son, Heath Thomas, Oct. 16, 1979.

Linwood News: Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Schroeder were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Linwood United Methodist Church Sunday, Oct. 7, 1979.

The third annual Hubbard Reunion was held on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the 4-H Building in Tonganoxie. A delicious basket dinner was enjoyed by all.

Mr. Duane Evans came in first in his age group in the 10,000 meter (or 6.2 miles) race, Sunday, at Parkville, Mo., and his son, Rafe Evans won first in his age group in the same race.

Ambrose L. Dempsey, dairy farmer and Kansas state legislator, received the Kansas Grange Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture Friday.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1954

Deaths: Word has been received of the death of Emma Kahn, a former resident here, at Council Grove, Sept. 18, 1954. Burial was at Dwight, Kansas, where she had been making her home. Gus Mears, 92, died at Leavenworth Saturday. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James T. Mears, by covered wagon through Iowa to Kansas and lived near Jarbalo many years. Harry T. Ryan, Leavenworth, died Tuesday. He had lived on the same farm north of Fairmount for 30 years. Martin L. Decker, 84, died at his home on R2, Easton, Tuesday morning. Mrs. Frances Ann Trackwell, 88, former resident of Jarbalo, died Friday in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Bonner Springs is having a hot fight over location of a cemetery. It seems it is located west of town in Leavenworth County and no sane resident of Bonner wants to wind up there. We’ll go further. Nobody wants to wind up in any cemetery. They just keep putting it off.

Linwood: Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Garrison announce the birth of a girl on Oct. 17 at Quenemo.

Bob Ammel was released from the army Oct. 19 at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. Bob was a 1949 graduate of Tonganoxie H. S. and has been in the army since that time.

Pvt. Roy L. Kraus, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kraus of Route 3, Tonganoxie, was discharged from the U.S. Army at the Transfer Point, Special Troops Command, Fort Benning, Georgia, on 30 Oct. 1954.

75 years ago: Oct. 17, 1929

John W. Wickey, of southeast of Tonganoxie, reports the theft of three milk cows, one red and two Holsteins Tuesday night from the Wickey farm. The red cow had a yoke mark on her neck. The Holsteins were 3 and 4 years old respectively.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Myers and Mrs. Mollie Myers attended the funeral of Mrs. Sarah McClurg in Leavenworth, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Angell and sons, Fred and Theron, attended the dedication of the new airport at Lawrence, Sunday.

Hugh C. Honan, age 53, of Kansas City, an uncle of John Dorney, cashier of the Tonganoxie State Bank, was killed Tuesday in a motor car accident, near Altamont, Mo.

Donald Joe Klinkenberg, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Klinkenberg, received a broken arm yesterday afternoon, when he fell out of a swing on the school grounds at recess time.

The annual supper of the Franklin Ice Cream Co., was celebrated in Laming’s hall last night. There were about 80 persons present, employees of the Franklin and their families. A bountiful supper was served at seven o’clock after which the evening was spent in playing cards and dancing.

Linwood, Route 2: The Pickens school received the $5 reward given by Dr. Cox of Tonganoxie, to the school for having the most perfect teeth of any school in Leavenworth county, there being 16 cavities and 15 pupils.

Basehor: Ace, Roy and Jim Grisham attended the funeral of their young nephew Lester Bigford at Manhattan, Kansas, Saturday.

Hoge Station: Mr. James McNerney and sister, Margaret, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sheehan and Miss Mary Fultin attended Jeanne Eagles funeral Tuesday in Kansas City. Mr. Joseph Rieger and daughter, Mrs. John Doege, were called to Kansas City Monday by the death of Mrs. Catherine Reiger.

100 years ago: Oct. 27, 1904

Hoge: Several autos passed through our berg last Saturday on their way to Topeka, and returned Sunday evening.

Neely: Leroy Sample reports a new boy at his house.

Neely: Mrs. L.F. Needham received word this week that her father had died at Sapulpa, Indian Territory.

The St. Louis inventor who thought he had mastered the problem of aerial navigation is now in the hospital with a broken leg.

Strayed or Stolen: A small bay mare with both ears split. A suitable reward for her return will be paid by Frank Zoellner.

A new boy arrived at the home of Jacob Freienmuth Tuesday.

Hoge: John Orr went to Kansas City last Friday to attend the horse show.

The Harvest Home Festival program given at the Congregational church Sunday night was quite a success.
