Perry too much for THS

By Staff | Nov 23, 2004

Tonganoxie’s eighth-grade junior high team went 2-1 last week.

The Warriors defeated Patton, 37-15, before losing to Perry, 44-18. Thursday, the Warriors came back and beat Piper on the road, 34-28.

Tonganoxie played good defense against Patton, limiting the team to just three points in the second and third quarters. The scoring was very balanced. Chrissy Jeannin had nine, followed by Jamie Hicks with eight. Emily Gripka and Lauren Himpel had seven apiece. Megan Puhr scored four and Rachel Krivjansky scored two.

TJHS hit a buzz saw against Perry. The Warriors had great difficulty against the Kaw defense and could not stop their scoring output. Too many turnovers hurt the home team against a talented Perry squad. Jeannin led the team in rebounding. Gripka scored six points, while Himpel had four. Hicks, Jeannin, Krivjansky and Puhr had two each.

The Warriors played their best basketball of the season in the first half against Piper, taking a 23-11 lead into the locker room at halftime. Defensive pressure on the guards and the Pirates post player helped ignite the offensive game. Puhr and Himpel had four assists each. Jeannin had eight rebounds followed by Hicks and Katelyn Kerbaugh with seven each. Jeannin led the team in scoring with 13, followed by Puhr with eight, Hicks with five and Kerbaugh and Gripka each with four.

The B-team split their games for the week, losing to Perry, 18-14, and defeating Piper, 20-18.

Coach Chris Weller was pleased with the girls’ effort in both games. The girls passing game has greatly improved since the beginning of the season, Weller said.

Seventh-graders stumble

The Tonganoxie Junior High seventh-grade girls basketball team concluded a hectic week with three games each of A-team and B-team games.

The B-team split two games at Perry-Lecompton. They also lost a closely contested 17-11 game to Piper.

The A-team opened the week with a win against Patton.

The Warriors won, 22-6, and then traveled the next night to Perry and lost ,43-19, to the home team. The Warriors then played Piper, but lost at home, 35-23.

“In every game, we have done many good things,” TJHS coach Phil Jeannin said. “However, we cannot seem to get over the hump against the better team.

“Perry had an outstanding 6-4 girl, while Piper was super quick and talented. As long as we keep improving, I’ll be happy.”
