THS volleyball suffers first Kaw Valley losses

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 13, 2004

Tonganoxie’s perch atop the Kaw Valley League has expired.

As they faced two teams on their heals in the KVL standings Oct. 5 in Tonganoxie, the Chieftains couldn’t overtake defending KVL champ Mill Valley or perennial power Lansing.

In the opening match, Mill Valley won game 1 with a narrow 25-23 score and took the match with an identical score in the second game.

In the final match of the night, the Chieftains looked to knock off the team that had defeated them in the substate finals the last three years. But Lansing squeaked past THS with a 28-26 result in the first game.

The Lions then overpowered the Chieftains in game two, 25-17.

Tonganoxie’s two losses to Manhattan were the only blemishes on the Chieftains’ schedule coming into those matches. But the squads dropped THS to 5-2 in the KVL and knocked Tonganoxie out of first place in the league.

“We were OK, not wonderful,” THS co-coach Brandon Parker said. “We’re disappointed, but you learn from every loss.”

In the other match, Lansing got past Mill Valley in three games (25-22, 20-25, 25-15).

Both teams made state appearances last season. Parker assessed whether the teams are as strong as last year’s programs.

“Mill Valley probably is,” Parker said. “Lansing’s probably not quite as strong, but they played well.”

The Chieftains placed third in the De Soto Spikefest on Saturday and played Tuesday against Bishop Ward and Santa Fe Trail on Senior Night. Look for results from Tuesday’s matches in next week’s edition of The Mirror.
