Regionals begin this week for THS soccer
Seniors on the Tonganoxie soccer team had fond memories of their final regular-season game at Chieftain Park on Oct. 19.
THS scored in the four minutes into the game and just kept on bringing the goals.
Tonganoxie defeated Eudora, 10-0, in a game that ended about 12 minutes early because of the mercy rule. The Chieftains also won by a 10-0 score earlier in the season at Eudora.
"I think we moved the ball real well," THS coach Luke Denney said. "We wanted to try different things."
Tonganoxie led, 7-0, at halftime as Kirk Rodell scored four goals -- two unassisted and another two courtesy of fellow senior Brad Willis. Willis also scored two in the first half as another senior, Travis Schultz, also scored for the Chieftains.
Rodell and Willis both scored in the second half, while sophomore Zack Mayse scored the final goal.
Tonganoxie had 31 shots on goal -- 18 in the first half.
Eudora had eight total, with six coming in the second half.
THS senior goalie Shane Gober had six saves, while Eudora goalies had 17.
Tuesday's game was delayed in the second half when a Eudora player was injured. The Cardinal player's knee cap slipped out of place and to the outside of his knee.
Tonganoxie finished the regular season at 6-9-1.
Tonganoxie 1, Bishop-Ward 0
A late Brad Willis goal courtesy of a Kirk Rodell assist late in the second half pushed Tonganoxie to a 1-0 win against Ward last Thursday in Kansas City, Kan.
Like every other soccer program in the state, Tonganoxie finished its season early last week, but had to wait until Saturday to find out where it would be who and where they would be playing in the postseason. At 6-9-1, Tonganoxie drew Louisburg (9-7-0) in Regional 4 of the Northeast regions.
The game, which did not meet The Mirror's deadline, was played Tuesday evening in Louisburg.
For a game recap, check The Mirror's Web site at www.tonganoxiemirror.com to find out how THS fared.
The winner of the game advances to the regional finals to play the De Soto-Basehor-Linwood winner.
De Soto entered the playoffs with an 11-5-0 record, while Basehor-Linwood was 5-11-0. The winners of those games will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in De Soto. Other KVL teams competing in Class 4-3-2-1A regionals are Bonner Springs (10-5-0), Perry-Lecompton (7-7-1) and Piper (6-9-0) in Regional 2 and Bishop-Ward (2-14-0) and Immaculata (record not available) in Regional 1.
