McLouth volleyball has senior strength

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 1, 2004

Rachel Webb came to McLouth last year inheriting a team that won just two matches the previous year.

Webb moved the Bulldogs in the right direction, leading the team to a 10-18 mark last fall.

This year, everyone is better acquainted and expectations are high.

“We have a really strong senior class,” Webb said.

Leading the Class of ’05 is Emily Nitzsche, who earned all-Delaware Valley League honors last year as a junior. Also playing their final year in Bulldog uniforms are Leigh Anna and Stephanie Thompson, Amelia Coffin and Ashley Alloway.

Basically, Webb is optimistic about this year’s squad. 30 players are out this year, so MHS has varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads. The Bulldogs also have added another coach in Karen Kopitsky, a former middle school coach in Kansas City, Kan. Kopitsky will coach the junior varsity squad, and longtime McLouth coach Jenny Thompson will direct the freshmen.

Webb expects her squad to be a good offensive team as the Bulldogs “have a really good hitting team coming up.” But with talent must come the intangibles — team chemistry. The Bulldogs definitely have that this year, Webb said. The second-year coach has a better feel for her team — and vice versa.

MHS competed in the Delaware Valley League tournament last weekend and also had a triangular Tuesday in Wathena.
