Overland Park auto dealership moves business to Tonganoxie

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Sep 15, 2004

An Overland Park car dealership is moving to Tonganoxie. And, no, they don’t sell music videos.

MTV Auto Sales Inc. has moved its previously owned vehicle sales from Overland Park to Tonganoxie. The company has set up shop in the former City Ford building on U.S. Highway 24-40.

According to co-owner David Teel, the company has moved from 81st Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

“We wanted to get out somewhere that you might get a tire stolen off a car, but they wouldn’t take the whole car,” Teel said.

Plans call for MTV to have about 40 cars and trucks for sale at the Tonganoxie location.

Teel said he hopes to attract an auto-repair company to the building, which he is leasing.

“We hope to have it up and running full service by next month, at the latest,” he said.

Although he lives in Olathe, Teel said he’s know about the Tonganoxie area for years and has friends here with whom he worked at Santa Fe Railway.

“When we had this opportunity in Tonganoxie, we jumped all over it,” he said.

The name of the company has caught attention. MTV actually is the initials of the last names of the original company owners — McNeal, Teel and Van Houtan.

Teel, who worked for Olathe Ford for about six years before opening MTV about three years ago, said the name caught on.

“We’ve even had people call up and request videos,” he said, laughing.

Teel said he and his salesman/finance manager probably will staff the dealership.

“I may hire one more salesman,” he said. “It depends on the traffic. It’s what we call a one-man lot.”
