Chieftain boys place sixth at Rim Rock; Weller finishes fifth

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 22, 2004

Andy Kolman led the Chieftain boys team at the Rim Rock Classic with a fifth-place finish in the interstate meet.

But a large gap between Kolman and the rest of the team on the rain-soaked course left the Chieftains with a sixth-place finish in the Blue Division.

Kolman finished in 18 minutes, 7 seconds, while fellow senior Matt Chenoweth finished in 19:58. Chenoweth, however, finished in 46th as Tonganoxie scored 183 points. Brett Garrett finished in 20:01 for 50th place, Levi Huseman 20:03 for 52nd and Colt Coffin 20:03 for 54th. Colin Perkins finished with a 20:27 time for 64th and Justin Smith 21:05 for 84th. The varsity meet included 137 runners on 19 teams.

“Andy Kolman ran extremely well,” THS coach Phil Williams said. “But then we had a big gap after him and that kind of hurt our team score.”

John Davis and Michael Shaw competed in the junior varsity race. Davis was 51st with a 20:40 time, while Shaw was 106th with a 22:17 time.

Skutt Catholic (Neb.) won the meet with 73 points. De Soto finished second (98), while Kearney (Neb.) scored 141. Excelsior Springs (Mo.) scored 144 and Girard 149. Jeff West finished seventh (209), Hayden eighth (238), Mill Valley ninth (265) and Pembroke Hill (Mo.) 10th (276).

Tonganoxie is back in action Thursday at its own invitational. The meet begins at 4 p.m. with 22 teams competing.

Weller takes fifth

Freshman Christy Weller was Tonganoxie’s only girls runner at Saturday’s Rim Rock Classic. With other team members gone to K-State Band Day, Weller went it alone.

And she fared fairly well all by herself.

Weller placed fifth in the Blue Division, also known as the small school division. Weller’s time was 17:09 on the 2.5-mile course. Normal high school meets are two miles long.

The experience at Rim Rock will prepare Weller, as well as the boys team members when the state meet nears later next month, Williams said.

“I think it’s really good preparation for the state meet for all the kids,” Williams said. “That’s the main reason we go up there.”

Weller competed against 82 other runners as 11 teams participated in the event.

Kaw Valley League’s past and present placed high in the Blue Division race. Former KVL member De Soto took first with 61, while Mill Valley placed third with 68. Lansing placed fourth with 124.
