Tonganoxie’s substate volleyball tournament won’t include a potential match-up with regular postseason opponent Lansing.

In fact, the Chieftains won’t see the Lions in any postseason play in sports other than football.

LHS recently moved up to Class 5A after the Kansas High School Activities Association announced its classifications this week for the 2004-05 school year. Football classifications are determined by enrollment in the freshman, sophomore and junior classes. Other sports are determined by sophomore, junior and senior classes.

With 510 students in its top three classes, Lansing became the smallest 5A school. Blue Valley West is the classes largest school with 955 students.

Tonganoxie remained in the middle of 4A. THS has 363 students in its top three classes. Class 4A ranges in size from Belle Plaine’s 216 to Augusta’s 505.

Bonner Springs joined Lansing as the only Kaw Valley League school changing classes. Bonner Springs dropped from 5A to 4A.

McLouth will compete in 3A this year after a stint as a 2A school. Fellow Delaware Valley League school Horton also jumped up to 3A from 2A. Another DVL school, Doniphan West, the newly combined high school of Highland and Midway-Denton, is a 2A school.

Highland and Midway-Denton both were 1A schools last year and had 8-man football teams, but now all their competitions will be in 2A.

On the state level, Wichita East is the largest school with 1,632; Jennings-Prairie Heights is the smallest with 12.
