Early runs set tone for Piper in victory

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 13, 2005

After last week’s monumental wins against Jeff West, the Tonganoxie High baseball team has struggled in Kaw Valley League play.

On Thursday, Basehor-Linwood roughed up Tonganoxie by a 10-1 score at Field of Dreams in Basehor. The second game of that doubleheader will be played Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium.

Monday, the Chieftains entertained Piper in Tonganoxie in Sunflower Broadband Channel 6’s Game of the Week. Piper’s bats gave Tonganoxie plenty of fits in a 12-3 victory.

Tonganoxie’s bright spot came in the bottom of the seventh when Kirk Rodell connected on a three-run home run.

Heavy rains came shortly after the teams finished their first game. The second game was postponed and will be played at 4:30 p.m. May 3 in Tonganoxie. The junior varsity will play its rescheduled doubleheader against the Pirates on April 20 at Piper High.

Tonganoxie now is 2-4 on the season and 0-4 in league play. The Chieftains will meet Mill Valley on Thursday in Shawnee. The first game will begin at 4 p.m.

The Chieftains then will head to the home of the Royals on Tuesday for Community Day at the K.

Tonganoxie and Basehor-Linwood will play at Kauffman Stadium sometime Tuesday afternoon.

Kansas City and Cleveland will play at 1:10 p.m. with the high school game to follow.
