Pirates extend THS losing skid

April 20, 2005

Tonganoxie found itself in the midst of a pitching duel Monday at Piper in a softball game rescheduled from last week.

Unfortunately for Tonganoxie, the Pirates had just enough offense to get the job done. Piper won the first game, 2-0, and then used three consecutive innings to score all its runs in the second game for an 8-2 victory and the sweep.

"Our hits are strung out and we're striking out way too much," THS coach Merri Samuels said.

In the first game, THS sophomore pitcher Amie Riddle held Piper at bay, giving up two runs on eight hits. Piper scored in the second and sixth innings. Of Tonganoxie's three errors in the first game, two eventually led to Piper runs.

Piper limited Tonganoxie to three hits in the first game. Ashlee Lohman had a double in that game, while Laura Jeannin and Addie Heim both had singles. THS struck out eight times in the first game.

In game 2, Piper jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Tonganoxie responded with two runs of its own in the third. Hannah Herrstrom got on base with a double and Addie Heim later batted her in with a groundout. Later in the inning, Lohman knocked out another hit and earned an RBI for what would be Tonganoxie's final run.

Amanda Albert gave up three runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. Heather Ramirez came in for the final two innings and allowed one hit.

In the second game, THS struck out seven times.

Now 1-5 on the season, Tonganoxie will search for its first league wins of the season Thursday when Bonner Springs comes to Tonganoxie.

The doubleheader will start at 4:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Tonganoxie will travel to the Carbondale area for a doubleheader against Santa Fe Trail.
