Rain, Mill Valley ruin home game for THS.

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 27, 2005

Conditions Monday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie seemed more suitable for an October football game than an April softball twinbill.

The field was sloppy, temperatures outside were cold and light rain fell throughout the game.

But Mill Valley and Tonganoxie managed to get one game in.

Tonganoxie was in the ball game heading into the fifth inning. The Chieftains trailed, 6-3, at that point after a two-run fourth, but the Jaguars wouldn’t allow THS to get any closer. Mill Valley pounded out three more runs in the fifth and then engineered a six-run sixth inning for a 15-3 victory.

The Jaguars improved to 9-2 with the win, while Tonganoxie dropped to 3-6.

When the first game finished, coaches conversed and opted not to play the second game.

Mill Valley’s Cat White improved to 6-0 on the season as she pitched a no-hitter for the Jaguars. All of Tonganoxie’s runs were unearned. Mill Valley had 13 hits, while each team committed four errors.

“Going into the sixth inning, we were in the game until then,” THS assistant coach Debbie Himpel said.

The Chieftains earned their first doubleheader sweep of the year Thursday in Tonganoxie. THS blanked Bonner Springs, 3-0, in the first game and 4-0 in the second game.

The Chieftains were scheduled to play Santa Fe Trail on Tuesday on the road and will play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Perry-Lecompton.

Reports on both doubleheaders can be found in the May 4 edition of The Mirror.

THS coach Merri Samuels currently is coaching junior varsity games.

She still is the team’s head coach, but has decided not to coach from the coach’s box during varsity games because of recent heath issues.

“I decided to step back a little bit,” Samuels said Monday.

Craig Lohman and Himpel coach varsity games, while Samuels coaches junior varsity games with Diane Titterington.

But Samuels still overseas practice and works with her assistant coaches preparing for game days.

“We still collaborate and talk and look at stats and we’re all still kind of involved in all of that,” Samuels said.

Samuels will be back in the varsity dugout May 9 when the Chieftains play Pleasant Ridge. Junior varsity will not be playing that day.
