Break disrupts water service to district
Rural Water District 6 was so dry Monday that even the fire station didn't have any water.
The district is west of Tonganoxie, with its water tower near Kansas Highway 16 and Parallel Road.
Tonganoxie Township fire chief Tom Pulkrabek attributed the lack of water to a break in the main water line.
Pulkrabek said assistant fire chief Tim Smith paged firefighters Monday evening "telling us there was a main water break in District 6 and that the fire station was out of water."
Fortunately, Pulkrabek said, there were no fires to fight during the hours the district was without water.
"Obviously out in this area that's one of our main fireplugs, because we don't have any others that are serviceable until we go back in town."
Pulkrabek said the fire department always keeps 1,000 gallons of water on its pumper truck and 2,500 in its tanker, which would have been available in case of a fire. And he said, had a fire occurred, other fire districts would have been available to bring additional water.
Residents who live in the water district also went without water.
Tammy Kissinger said her home had no water from about 10 a.m. Monday until after midnight. And Ed Kissinger, who called The Mirror early Tuesday morning, said he was without water for at least a day.
