St. Marys topples THS in boys game
St. Marys started out on fire against Tonganoxie on Friday in St. Marys.
Unfortunately for Tonganoxie, the Chieftains couldn't counter with enough water to douse the St. Marys flame.
THS trailed, 6-2, early in the game, and would get no closer. The Bears led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and then went on a 16-2 run in the second quarter that led to a commanding 39-17 halftime lead.
The Chieftains started to generate more offense at times during the second half, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter, but St. Marys was just too strong for the visiting Chieftains.
The Bears won, 76-54, and improved to 1-0 on the season. THS dropped to 0-1 on the new season.
"They jumped out pretty quick and we got frustrated," THS coach David Walker said.
Tonganoxie had bright spots on offense as Gabe Belabrajdic led the team with 11 points. Jeff Hughes was Tonganoxie's No. 2 scorer with 8.
Although it might not have appeared to be a good defensive outing, Walker said he was pleased with his team's ability to box out under the basket.
Tonganoxie also was short-handed against the Bears. Zack Pistora and Zeb Kissinger did not play Friday. Pistora was at a debate tournament, while Kissinger was at a leadership conference in Washington, D.C.
After their rough first game, the Chieftains, though, had a chance Tuesday to start fresh as they entered the first round of the Ike Cearfoss Basketball Tournament at Central Heights.
The Chieftains played against Olathe Christian on Tuesday at CHHS. A win Tuesday would have given Tonganoxie a semifinal match-up with Central Heights on Thursday.
Tuesday's game against Olathe Christian did not meet The Mirror's deadline, but reports from that contest can be found in next week's edition of The Mirror.
