Kaw Valley League meet on tap next at Santa Fe Trail

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 9, 2005

Ross Starcher will have an opportunity to avenge two of his three losses this year. Starcher and his fellow Tonganoxie wrestlers will compete in the Kaw Valley League tournament on Saturday at Santa Fe Trail near Carbondale.

If Starcher reaches the finals, he likely will take on state medalist Justin Wiscombe. Starcher has faced Wiscombe twice this year. On both occasions, the Charger grappler outlasted the Tonganoxie senior. Starcher is 29-3 heading into today’s dual at Basehor-Linwood.

Tonganoxie wrestlers will be using today’s dual and Saturday’s tournament to get back on track. Last Thursday at Lansing, Tonganoxie lost duals to Bonner Springs, Lansing and Mill Valley.

“We got our butts kicked,” THS coach Jeremy Goebel said. “There’s no reason to get pinned 14 times.”

Tonganoxie lost to Mill Valley, 59-17, and then narrowly lost to Bonner Springs, 41-36. But in the final match, Lansing dropped THS, 71-12.

In that match, Lansing pinned Tonganoxie wrestlers seven times. All of those happened in the first period and all but two occurred more than a minute into the match.

Starcher went 3-0 on the night, while Hunter Samuels finished 2-1. Fellow senior Garrett Palmer, who was nursing sore ribs, did not compete. Along with Starcher, Ryan Stockman and Jeff Frank also recorded wins by pins.

Beau Waters, who was injured in his match against Timmy Vaughan of Bonner Springs, did not wrestle against Mill Valley or Lansing. Waters reinjured a nagging ankle.
