Chieftains rebound against SFT
A Michael Morris basket with roughly five seconds left in the game pushed Tonganoxie to a Kaw Valley League win Saturday against Santa Fe Trail.
The makeup contest played at THS was tight throughout the game.
Tonganoxie had a 17-14 lead at the half and was up, 28-23, heading into the fourth. In the final stanza, Tonganoxie held on and improved to 5-13 overall.
"We were just mirror images of each other that day," THS coach David Walker said. "Each played 2-3 defense and both had a big guy in the middle."
In the big guy showdown, it was Morris vs. SFT's Jake Carter. Morris is listed at 6-7, while Carter stands about 6-9.
Although he didn't win the height advantage, Morris did score 14 to Carter's 13. And, Morris hit that game-winning shot.
"I thought Michael played pretty well in the sense that he was up against some his height, size-wise," Walker said.
Walker also was pleased with how his team played together, especially after being defeated soundly about 15 hours earlier Friday against Mill Valley.
"I was real proud of our guys to come back and not let Friday's game overshadow them," Walker said.
The teams combined for only 12 free-throw attempts in the game. THS was 2-for-5 while Trail went 1-for-7 from the line.
Tonganoxie played Tuesday against Perry-Lecompton and will finish out the regular season Friday at Basehor-Linwood.
