Atchison boys in good form for invitational tournament

January 19, 2005

State-ranked Atchison could meet another state-ranked team in Immaculata in the Tonganoxie Invitational.

That won't be an adjustment for the 6-2 Redmen. On Friday, Atchison played Platte County, the No. 1 team in Missouri's Class 4A.

Atchison had a seven-point lead with about two minutes left in the game, but Platte County overcame the deficit and the Pirates improved to 12-0 with a 58-57 win at Atchison.

Despite a heartbreaking loss against Platte County, Atchison is in good shape this week at the Tonganoxie Invitational.

The Redmen got past Silver Lake on Monday in the opening round of the tournament and now will meet Pleasant Ridge on Friday. The Rams defeated Lansing in their opening round game Monday as well.

A win against PRHS would put Atchison in the championship against Immaculata, Eudora, Jeff West or Tonganoxie.

George Ross Jr., in his fifth year as Atchison's coach, has guided AHS to two state appearances. The Redmen earned a state berth in 2002 with a Cinderella run to Salina that included a substate title game win against Tonganoxie.

And last year, Atchison advanced to state again and finished fourth in the tournament with a 21-5 record. This year, Atchison returns seven seniors -- Jeff Downing, Avery Webb, Jake Henry, Jay Hunter, Anthony Barnhart, Wes Downing and Roger Purdy. Atchison features some height with two 6-foot-5 players in Purdy and junior Mark May.

Junior J.J. Seymore is a scoring threat for the Redmen. Seymore scored 26 against Platte County. He was on fire from behind the arc, scoring six three-pointers against the Pirates.

Atchison will meet Pleasant Ridge at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Tonganoxie Invitational semifinals.
