Linwood mayor facing charges

By Staff | Jul 13, 2005

Linwood Mayor Steve Campbell has been charged in Lansing Municipal Court with driving under the influence and attempting to elude police.

According to Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman, Campbell also was charged with speeding in a 40 mph zone and having defective equipment on his motorcycle.

About 10:30 p.m. July 2 in Lansing, Campbell was driving a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle when stopped by a Lansing police officer, Wayman said.

Wayman said a police officer first noticed Campbell at Kansas Highway 7 and Highland Street, stopping him about a mile and a half away.

“When he (the officer) attempted to stop the vehicle, it appeared that the individual (Campbell) attempted to avoid the traffic stop,” Wayman said.

Wayman said Lansing police officers took Campbell to the Leavenworth County Jail.

According to the Leavenworth County sheriff’s office, Campbell was booked into the jail at 1 a.m. July 3, and released about two hours and 20 minutes later.

His bond was set at $2,200, which included $1,500 for the DUI charge and $700 for the charge of attempting to elude.

Campbell is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 10 in Lansing Municipal Court.
