Tonganoxie No. 2 drops heartbreaker
The Tonganoxie No. 2 American Legion team was oh, so close to its first victory of the season.
Playing against Leavenworth Auxiliary Post 23 on Thursday in Tonganoxie, the Tonganoxie team was tied at nine with Post 23 heading into the sixth inning. But in the bottom of the sixth, Post 23 produced a triple to the gap in left-center and then followed with a single for a 10-9 victory.
Post 23 shot out of the gates with a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but Tonganoxie answered with three runs of its own in the top of the second. Jarred Lamb and Josh Nowasell scored on an RBI single by Alex Nowasell. Trey Brumbaugh also scored on an RBI single by Jordan Diekman.
Tonganoxie ran into trouble in the bottom of the second when starting pitcher Logan Forbis gave up four runs. Eric Lowe came in as relief pitcher and allowed two more runs in the inning. Lowe then shut down Post 23 with scoreless innings in the third, fourth and fifth innings. He faced just 11 batters in those innings.
Tonganoxie's offense, meanwhile staged a comeback. Josh Nowasell scored in the fourth on a single by Lowe. The team then added five more runs in the fifth on a two-out rally that tied the game. Trey Lohman started the rally with a single. Lohmna, Josh Nowasell, Lamb, Brumbaugh and Lowe all scored and tied the game before Post 23 could end the inning.
Post 23, however, scored in the next inning and secured the win.
In the first game, Post 23 also won by an 11-2 score.
The teams were tied at one through three innings, but Post 23 scored another run in the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth with nine runs.
Tonganoxie scored in the first when Boone Sorell's single scored Alex Nowasell. Sorrell knocked in the team's other run with a single that scored Diekman.
With the loss, Tonganoxie No. 2 dropped to 0-14.
