Bank to list former Ford dealership

By Lisa Scheller - | Jul 20, 2005

A prime piece of Tonganoxie real estate is back on the market.

The former Ford dealership, north of the junior high at 315 U.S. Highway 24-40, is for sale.

According to the Leavenworth County sheriffs office, which handled a foreclosure auction for the property on June 23, the building sold for $579,555. The terms of the sale required the buyer, Sand Trap Properties, a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. Bank, also to pay about $49,000 to cover back property taxes, said Susan Nester of the sheriff’s office.

Craig Buckley, vice president of U.S. Bank’s special assets department, said the bank plans to list the 5,925-square-foot building and the approximate 7.5 acres with Realtor Alison Moore, of the Winbury Group in Lawrence.

Buckley said he thought the property might be listed for its $745,000 appraised value.

The previous owners of the property, Sameer and Elizabeth Said, had attempted, without success, to sell the property, Buckley said.

The building carries a long history of Tonganoxie auto sales. In 1962, Laming Ford, in downtown Tonganoxie, became Sutton-Kolman Ford when Bob and Barbara Kolman and Ray and Darlene Sutton bought the business from Charles Laming.
Several years later, Sutton-Kolman moved to the highway location.
In 1996 the families sold the Ford dealership. Since then the business has had several owners, including former Kansas City Chiefs football player Marcus Allen.
Most recently, an Overland Park car dealership, MTV Auto Sales Inc., set up shop last September in the building on the highway.
After several months that dealership left town and the building has since been vacant.
