Ward takes third straight baseball title
The Bishop-Ward baseball juggernaut completed another championship season Saturday in Salina, but this title game took some time.
The Cyclones, who joined the Kaw Valley League last fall, won their third consecutive Class 4A state title with a 1-0 victory against Andover-Central. The Cyclones needed 11 innings to capture the win. Zach Mark's double scored Terry Roblez as Bishop Ward claimed the title.
Another KVL team earned a trophy in Salina. Santa Fe Trail finished in third place with a 9-3 win against Chanute. A four-run third inning helped the Chargers to the victory. Maize captured the 6A title with a 3-0 win against Manhattan in Lawrence as Shawnee Mission Northwest defeated Shawnee Mission East, 10-2, in the consolation game.
At the 5A tourney in Winfield, Wichita's Bishop Carroll defeated Shawnee Heights, 6-0. Seaman defeated Shawnee Mission's Bishop Miege, 9-1, in the consolation game.
Silver Lake completed a sweep of state titles as the Eagles defeated Galena, 11-8, in Manhattan for the 3A crown. The SLHS softball team also won its tournament. In the third-place game, Wichita Trinity blitzed Thomas More Prep-Marian of Hays, 10-1.
And in 2A action, Pittsburg Colgan dropped Oxford, 12-2. St. Mary's earned a third-place trophy with a 6-4 win against Sedan.
