By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 15, 2005

Tonganoxie No. 1 didn’t settle for one victory against Geiger Ready-Mix on Monday in Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie won the first game, 7-0, behind the pitching of John Volk, who gave up one hit and one walk against Geiger. Volk also had 11 strikeouts in the game.

In the second game, completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-1 victory.

In the first game, Derek Sparks had an RBI single in the first game, as did Phil George. Other highlights included Josh Putthoff’s double in the bottom of the fifth and Jake Heskett’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

Tonganoxie opened the game with a run in the first and then broke the contest open with three runs in the third.

In the second game, the teams were tied at one after three innings, but Tonganoxie scored another run in the fourth and then two more in the fifth.

Tonganoxie exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth as they blew the game wide-open.

“It seems like we waited a little bit in the second game to start hitting,” Tonganoxie coach Andy Gilner said.

But Gilner was happy to see the bats come alive, along with solid pitching in both contests.

After Volk handled Geiger in the first game, Putthoff pitched game 2, striking out three Geiger batters.

“You’ve got to be pleased with both pitchers,” Gilner said. “They kept us in both games, especially Josh in the second game.”

Daniel Volk ignited Tonganoxie in the second game with a 2 RBI double that pushed Tonganoxie’s lead to 4-1. In the five-run fifth, John Volk, George, Hunter Samuels and Putthoff all had singles for Tonganoxie.

Tonganoxie No. 1 now is 5-1 on the season heading into Friday’s doubleheader against the Leavenworth Knights in Leavenworth. The American Legion squad again will play Sunday against the Lansing Reds in Lansing.

Tonganoxie No. 1 vs. Tonganoxie No. 2

Tonganoxie’s two American Legion squads faced each other last week.

Tonganoxie No. 1, the predominately older Legion squad, defeated the younger No. 2 team by scores of 10-0 and 9-1.

Alex Nowasell registered Tonganoxie No. 2’s lone run of the evening. He hit a double in the third and later scored.

Tonganoxie No. 2, still searching for its first win of the season, will play Tuesday in Leavenworth against Geiger. The team then will be back home June 26 against Geiger.
