School board decides on insurance bid

By Staff | Jun 29, 2005

At a special school board meeting held Thursday afternoon, Tonganoxie board members voted 4-0 to accept an insurance bid from an Overland Park firm, Hawkeye Security.

The board approved an insurance package without earthquake coverage, which brought Hawkeye’s original bid of $147,405 down to $141,269. The package covers property, casualty and workers’ compensation insurance.

Originally, the district received two bids on the insurance package — the Hawkeye bid, and a bid from Employers Mutual Casualty through Evans Insurance of Tonganoxie. Evans’ bid, without earthquake coverage, would have been $172,303. Evans’ original bid, with earthquake coverage, was $174,929.

James Charlesworth, an insurance consultant hired by the district, said the Hawkeye bid would be about $31,000 less.

“My recommendation to the board would be to approve the plan,” Charlesworth said.

The board members also approved policy updates for dealing with the separation of church and state. The changes were recommended by Kansas Association of School Boards attorney Cindy Kelly, who reviewed the policy for the district.

After meeting in executive session for 10 minutes, board members hired Phil Loomis as head baseball coach, Debbie Himpel and Craig Lohman as co-head softball coaches and Kenneth Lott as high school auto mechanics instructor and soccer coach. The board also voted to hire Mark Poltera as 10th grade English teacher.
