Obituary: Inez Irene Spain

Services for Inez Irene Spain, 91, Wamego, will be at 10:30 a.m. today, March 2, 2005, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego, with the Rev Larry Spain officiating. Burial will be in St. George Cemetery, St. George, Kan.

Mrs. Spain died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at her son’s home in Topeka. She was a longtime resident of the area. She was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Nemaha County, the daughter of Ellsworth and Lenna Henry Edwards.

She married Bertie B. Spain on May 3, 1930, in Holton. He died Jan. 28, 1972.

She was a homemaker and also worked several years in the bakery at the Dillon’s Store in Manhattan. Mrs. Spain was an active, longtime member of the New Life Baptist Church, formally the Bible Baptist Church, in Wamego.

Survivors include three daughters, Sylvia Nelson, Surprise, Ariz., Betty Sharp, Eldon, Mo., and June Spain, Manhattan; three sons, Norman Spain, Wamego, William Spain, Tonganoxie, and Larry Spain, Topeka; a brother, Melvin Edwards, Netawaka; a sister, Bessie Oden, Horton; 27 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Opal Collier, in July 1991 and a great-grandson.
