Bogus bills detected at store
Counterfeit bills are being passed off at a Tonganoxie convenience store.
Last week, on two separate occasions, clerks discovered that someone had given them counterfeit $1 bills at G and P Country Market, 1204 E. U.S. Highway 24-40.
"It appears to be the same person because last night's were passed with the same serial numbers," Tony Hernandez of the Tonganoxie police department said Friday.
The bills were used to pay when the store was full of customers, Hernandez said.
In addition, when the person paid Thursday, a legitimate bill was on top of the stack and the bogus bills were facing front-side down. The initial bills were found April 26.
"It was kind an off-color green and the serial numbers were all the same on the bills," Hernandez said.
The bills have been sent to the Secret Service for review.
Hernandez urges retailers at area businesses to keep an eye out for more counterfeit bills, especially when the businesses have a number of customers in the store.
