Topeka-based lumber company decides to build near 173rd Street

May 4, 2005

After a change of location, Schmidt Lumber is ready to move into Leavenworth County.

A year ago, the Topeka-based building supply company planned to locate on the south side of U.S. Highway 24-40 near 166th Street. This would have been just inside Basehor city limits.

However, plans have changed. The lumber yard will be built on the north side of U.S. 24-40 near 173rd Street, according to John Duncan, chief operating officer of Schmidt Lumber Supply Co. Inc.

"We're moving forward fairly rapidly," Duncan said. "Hopefully by September we'll have the building in the air and be up and running."

The lumber yard will be constructed in the Shadow Cove subdivision, owned by Jeff Himpel and Basehor Development. Duncan said his company will lease buildings and property at the five-acre site from Stone House Rentals, Lawrence, with D.F. Osborne, Topeka, as contractor. Construction will include two 18,000-square-foot buildings and an asphalt parking lot. The property is in the county, about midway between Basehor and Tonganoxie.

Schmidt Lumber has operated in Topeka since 1972. Nine years ago, the company opened a Lawrence branch.

"At our Lawrence location we started with 10 people and have almost 30 down there now," Duncan said. "So we look for probably even more rapid growth at this particular location (Leavenworth County)."

Duncan said the lumber company plans to hire local people to run the Leavenworth County business. He said they'll probably start taking applications in July or August.

Though the business caters to contractors, with about 98 percent contractor-based, Duncan said they also serve individuals who need building materials.

"We're very excited about it," Duncan said. "We very much appreciate the building that's going on in your area. ... We've kind of been a part of it from afar -- we're excited about being a part of it from right on site."
