McLouth High School student artwork earns gold

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 11, 2005

A road trip to Highland proved to be a successful jaunt for the McLouth High School art department.

McLouth was named the top school overall in the Class 3-2-1A division at the Highland Community College Art Show on April 30.

Judges awarded McLouth eight gold medals and five honorable mentions, helping the school to its first team trophy since art instructor Brad LeDuc came to McLouth in 2000. MHS placed second at last year’s competition.

“I was really excited about that,” LeDuc said, referring to the team trophy. “It was kind of like winning a state championship or something for football.”

McLouth’s gold medals, also known as artistic excellence awards, went to Crystal Snyder, Devyn Roberts, Ted Luse, Cody Berry, Brad Jones Justin Drinnon and Sarah Vogel.

In the honorable mention category, Jonah Wise, Christy Gunther and Vincent Brauer received single recognition. Michael Johnson received two honorable mentions.

McLouth competed against nearly 40 other schools at the event. A group of schools in the Class 6-5-4A division also competed.

“We were all pretty ecstatic,” LeDuc said. “I really just wanted them to know how much of an honor it is to win a competition like that.”

McLouth also participated in the Delaware Valley League Art Show a week earlier in Wathena.

At that show, each DVL school could submit twice as many pieces as the school had art students. LeDuc said McLouth had the second-most awards at the show behind Pleasant Ridge.

Success at both Wathena and Highland put the finishing touches on what LeDuc called a great school year at MHS.

“I was just real pleased with their effort in the classroom and their work ethic,” LeDuc said.
