THS golfers achieve best round ever at KVL
The goal has been accomplished.
Heading into Monday's Kaw Valley League golf meet at Painted Hills in Kansas City, Kan., Tonganoxie made it a team goal to finish in the top half of the field in the 10-team tournament.
Tonganoxie finished fifth and had its best team score in school history with a 337. Cody Sims led the Chieftains with a 79. His score landed him in ninth place overall.
"We're just really excited to finish in the top half of the league," THS coach Steve Harrell said.
Zack Pistora shot an 85, while Chris Smith had an 86 and Garrett Kelly and 87. Adam Reetz wasn't far behind with a 91. Drew Scates also competed for the Chieftains. He shot a 105.
At the Perry Invitational last Thursday near Lake Perry, Tonganoxie finished sixth out of ten teams. Cody Sims set a team record with a low score of 74. He finished in second place at the tournament. Overall, Tonganoxie shot a 349. Pistora shot an 87, Smith a 92 and Kelly a 96. Reetz scored a 103, while Ben Jefferies shot a 118.
Now the team must turn its attention to Monday's Class 4A regional at Atchison where powerhouse Topeka-Hayden also will be competing.
"We know that Topeka Hayden's going to be the odds-on favorite," Harrell said. "After that you probably have to favor Atchison because it's their home course.
"We know Jeff West has a good team. We saw them at Perry-Lecompton."
And Harrell said his team can't forget about Basehor-Linwood.
"We've been chasing Basehor-Linwood all year, so we know there's some good team's out there," Harrell said.
Individually, Sims will look to clinch his first state berth Monday after just missing the cut the last two seasons.
Harrell said his top golfer has a good shot at making state this year. In the process, he thinks his whole team can build on Monday's performance.
"He's playing good golf and I know that his personal goal is to make a shot at making the state tournament and I think that's really realistic for him," Harrell said. "And his desire to want to golf better and reach that personal goal is pumping up some interest for some of the other guys to golf well. It's infectious."
Tonganoxie's regional includes Atchison, Basehor-Linwood, Hiawatha, Holton, Royal Valley, Piper, Jeff West, Perry-Lecompton and Hayden.
The tournament will tee-off at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Bellevue Country Club, 1713 Country Club Rd., Atchison.
